Belgrade - Astana service expected by mid-2017

Flights between Belgrade and the Kazakh capital of Astana are expected to launch in the lead-up to the 2017 Expo, a major bi-annual international exposition which begins next June. It comes after the two countries signed a Memorandum of Cooperation in the aviation sector on the sidelines of the Kazakh - Serbian business forum held yesterday. The Chairman of the Air Serbia Supervisory Board and the Mayor of Belgrade, Siniša Mali, said, "We hope that conditions are met for Air Serbia to launch nonstop flights to Astana so we can further link our two nations and people, as well as work on boosting trade and tourism". It is the second time Mr Mali has talked up the prospects of flights between the two capital cities following initial comments made in late August. If the service goes ahead, it would likely operate on a seasonal basis.

The Kazakh Minister for Transport and Communications, Jenis Kasymbek, said, "Today we signed a memorandum for the opening of direct flights between Astana and Belgrade. We expect the service to commence in the lead-up to Expo, during the summer of 2017". Kazakhstan has designated its national airline, Air Astana, as a possible operating carrier on the route, while Serbia selected its own flag carrier. The upcoming Expo is estimated to bring in between two and three million visitors to Astana next year. As a result, Finnair has announced it will introduce seasonal summer flights from Helsinki to the Kazakh capital next June. Serbian citizens do not require a visa to enter Kazakhstan. Furthermore, Serbia is one of only a handful of European countries that do not require Kazakhstani passport holders entry visas.

Several European carriers currently fly to Astana. They include Aeroflot, Belavia, KLM, Lufthansa, Ukraine International Airlines and Greece's Ellinair. Furthermore, Air Serbia's part-owner Etihad Airways maintains services to the city. Currently, none of the national carriers from the former Yugoslavia operate flights to central Asia. Apart from potential transfer passengers, services between Belgrade and Kazakhstan could cater for Serbian workers and engineers who are involved in the development of several major infrastructure projects in the country, although whether this could be enough to turn the potential service into reality remains to be seen. In a recent interview, Air Serbia's CEO, Dane Kondić, said the airline saw potential in markets such as Central Asia. Slovenia's Adria Airways is also reported to be looking into the possibility of operating flights to Kazakhstan in the near future.

Planned Niš flight announcement
A planned announcement of the arrival of a third carrier at Niš Constantine the Great Airport, which was reported on earlier during the day by EX-YU Aviation News and set to be announced today, has been cancelled and postponed for a later date

Maybe it can work if its seasonal. I doubt there is much demand for Helsinki-Astana either but they will be flying there because of the Expo.

I think there is enough demand for Belgrade-Tehran to run without a stop in any city. In fact I think it would be a surprise success for them like Beirut.

Belgrade-Astana is withing B737-300s range but I think it would make it just. A319 would have no problem to make this route.

The issue I see with this for Air Serbia is where will they find the planes. Unless they get another one. Especially since it would mean that a plane would be flying for around 10 or so hours.

Yet JU failed in WAW and BUD and is not doing that well in most Western destinations since they can't fly more than daily but to a few of those.

JU needs to improve its brand awareness before embarking on such adventures.

      Delete
    11. Anonymous12:28

Don't know where you got your information but most of JU's western European destinations are actually performing significantly better than last year. Much more passengers. The one that actually saw numbers go down is Moscow.

      Delete
    12. Anonymous12:30

If these destinations were performing so wonderfully then we would have seen additional frequencies, not cuts and reductions.

Unless you consider 4 weekly flights to CPH and ARN a success. Even AMS was reduced from 10 to 7.

The Beirut example is a slap in your face, an example that proves you totally wrong, yet JU didn't have the guts or the money to launch more of such destinations.

As for me, the most obvious choice in Kazakhstan would be ALA or AKX.

I am sure they have done some study and identified that flights to Astana could be potentially successful.

      4. Ja nisam zaposlenik aerodroma Niš ili Republike Srbije i moj posao jest traženje i objava informacija.

      Delete

Jel tada otkazana pressica?

Eto jučer se pisalo o Sarajevu i Wizzu... Hoće li Wizz prekinuti pregovore radi toga?

I opet naglašavam. I tada sam ja išao rovati i izrovao. I to ne u Srbiji! I još tražio dozvolu da objavim. I dobio je.

Since the topic is related to JU I would like to use the occasion to describe 3 recent flights I had in the past 10 days. BEG-FRA (05 Nov - economy) / DUS-BEG (12 Nov - economy) / BEG-SVO (15 Nov - business)
Beg – Fra ...check in quick and efficient, economy full 100% - business 1, departure on time, good perception on service onboard, purser on duty great, only negative cockpit announcement was made only to greet pax onboard but nothing about the flight itself
Dus-Beg ... in transit so can’t comment on check-in, economy about 80-90 pax – business 1 (I was quite surprised by the good LF for a Saturday late evening flight!), departure on time. Catering good and tasty hot meal served. Made a service spot check about a wine refill by buzzing the call button but response was not prompt. Once FA came she promised a refill then her colleague showed up to inform and apologize that they are out of wine. Cockpit announcement good and excellent landing in Beg despite very strong wind. Interesting they dispatched the A320 instead of the 319 for this flight.
Beg-Svo...check in good, lounge great with good wifi, economy about 100 pax – business 3. Slow and late boarding causing a 20 min delay at start despite the plane being in Belgrade at gate for several hours prior to our 17:00 departure. Waiting on paperwork to dispatch the flight caused the delay. No coat service. Service in business good and decent but nothing very special. Purser who was in charge was professional but she missed to have a personal touch to elevate the flying experience to something more memorable. There was nothing wrong and she was doing everything right but in some automated way. Very strong head wind slowed us even more so arrival in SVO late by 20-25 min. Cockpit info excellent and captain really went out of his way with ample communication both before and during the flight. Return flight to Beg I am afraid was quite empty as I didn’t see more than 25-30 pax waiting to board the return flight to Beg.
Flight to Astana is fiction! ... there is no need to dream and fly to Astana before we can fly regularly year round to Kyiv and LED

OT: BEG has a new rival, RIX airport. The YTD traffic is now 4,6 million!! If BT also launches TSE it will definitely steal the traffic and compete directly with JU. I think JU have to be very careful when launching this route.

Talking of Riga, airBaltic is about to have its first scheduled C-series flight, it will fly RIX-AMS-RIX.

Maybe now they will reconsider returning to BEG, especially since JU doesn't fly year-round to LED.

    2. I flew Tallin-Vienna recently with airBaltic. First time I was using them. You pay literally for everything, no service included whatsoever. Decent LF and very punctual. Boeing 737-500 metal on the flight.

airBaltic has been like that for around a decade now, I think from 2004 when they were invaded by Wizz Air and Ryanair.

What I like about them is the decent amount of frequencies and destinations, especially around Russia and the Nordic region.

dusan988 - it´s a hybrid low-cost carrier such as vueling. I think this will be the future - paid services, free Wi-fi, slim seats, etc, etc.
JU can perfectly apply this model and compete with W6 in BEG but also offer connections.

    5. Air Baltic 735s had the worst airplane seats I ever sat on. I felt like I was on a wooden bench, which had a back rest at a very awkward angle. Couldn't wait for landing.

Does it really matter if Air Serbia or Air Astana will fly (seasonally?) in the grand scheme of things? What matters is CEO's vision for the next 5-10 years: very slow annual growth (~5% average), fleet expansion by only a couple of aircraft, and as a result absolutely no need for new terminal at BEG. That was the most important announcement since the start of JFK flights and no one noticed!

OT: Meanwhile in Canada (copy paste from RTS website):

Well, one Canadian minister and Dačić signed "Declaration of intension about air traffic agreement", and they're hoping that agreement will be signed on the end of this or on the beginning of the next year.

I don,t know why many are do negative against flights from Beograd to Astana. Seasonally must work if price is competitive. Expo, no visa for Kazak for Serbia, Albania and Montenegro (sea), some business traffic, some novelty as tourist destination Astana in summer hot but dry and safe and flying to Almaty and visiting nearby Kirgizistan best mountain trekking views food people environment hidden secret discovered by foreign tourist last year's. Great potentials.
