Wizz Air has confirmed it will base a fourth aircraft in the Macedonian capital this summer and launch three new routes. As reported by EX-YU Aviation News, the no frills carrier will introduce year-round flights from Skopje to Rome Ciampino, Malta and Vaxjo in Sweden, starting July 14. All of the new routes will operate twice per week. Furthermore, Wizz will boost frequencies on existing services to Basel, Bratislava, Cherleroi, Copenhagen, Eindhoven, Gothenburg, Malmo and Memmingem. In addition, an extra weekly flight will be added between Ohrid and Basel, for a total of four. The airline previously announced the launch of a new two-weekly service between Budapest and the Macedonian capital starting this April.

The fourth aircraft joining Wizz's Skopje fleet represents a further investment of 99 million euros by the airline in Macedonia, creating 36 additional direct jobs and taking the total to over 150 direct jobs with Wizz in the country. Speaking at a press conference in the Macedonian capital, Wizz Air's Chief Corporate Officer, Owain Jones, said, "Today’s announcement further underlines our commitment to Macedonia and Wizz's dedication to bringing lowest-fare travel opportunities for our customers, coupled with Wizz's great on board service on one of the youngest fleets operating in Europe. Our investment into the Skopje base with an additional aircraft, three new routes and increased frequencies on existing flights means more jobs in Macedonia with both Wizz and our business partners and will further stimulate the tourism and hospitality industries and strengthen Macedonia’s business relations". He added, "As Macedonia’s hometown airline and the largest airline operating in Macedonia, Wizz Air is also celebrating today an important milestone, 3 million passengers carried on our low fare routes to and from Macedonia. We are celebrating Wizz’s Macedonian success story with a special Seat Sale of 20% off for all new bookings made today, February 28, to any of the 27 destination available from Skopje”.

The General Manager of TAV Macedonia, Alper Ersoy, said, "It is our great honur and privilege, before the start of the summer flight schedule, to celebrate reaching three million Wizz Air passengers in Macedonia, allocating its fourth aircraft in Skopje and another good news - the announcement of three new routes to Rome, Malta and Vaxjo, for which we are sure that will be met with great interest and excitement by passengers at Skopje Alexander the Great Airport. These three new destinations, together with the already announced new Wizz Air route to Budapest, which will start from the April 2l, are really attractive destinations, demanded by the market and will be a real success in the context of our route network expansion from both Macedonian airports. This is a result of our continuous marketing studies and activities".

Wizz Air handled a record 903.856 passengers at Skopje Alexander the Great Airport during 2016, maintaining its position as Macedonia's leading airline. The figure represents growth of 23% compared to the previous year. As a result, the airline carried 54.8% of all passengers flying in and out of the Macedonian capital last year. During 2016, Wizz launched four new routes from Skopje. The low cost airline commenced operations from Macedonia in 2011 and has since welcomed over three million passengers to and from the country.

This is good news however Skopje desperately needs wizz air routes in other capitals or attractive business and vacation destinations like Prague Warsaw Bucharest Madrid Lisbon Nice Bari Torino, Geneva, Moscow Not villages like Vaxjo.people are commenting they are shocked how did they come up with the idea for Vaxjo among such other really attractive wanted and needed destinations by the market. The diaspora argument doesnt hold anymore. People have to go all the way to Sofia or Thessaloniki to reach other attractive destinations.

So in July SKP will get 4 new destinations, these 3 from W6 and Qatar to Doha, not bad...plus increase in frequencies for some of the current routes, not bad. I'm wondering which W6 destination will be the one which will go daily, if that will happen soon.

Good news, but there must be some attraction in SKP for legacy carriers. I know that the demand for Frankfurt, Moscow, Munich, Amsterdam is covered by Croatia, Adria, Austrian at the moment, but there surely is a good case. How did Cirrus use to do on the FRA route? If not Lufthansa, then Eurowings for sure will find interest.

Also Brussels, if Wizz is increasing frequencies from Skopje to Charleroi there must be a case for Brussels Airlines. Prices on Brussels Airlines to Zagreb i.e. are actually cheaper than Wizz air prices to Skopje from Charleroi (Zagreb and Zaventem surely have higher costs per passenger than W6 in SKP and CLR). There is a change of government in Macedonia (the new one will likely be pro-EU and pro-NATO), so higher demand for Brussels passengers should be expected. Once EU negotiations start, of course even more.
