Eurowings will expand its operations from its newest base in Pristina this coming winter season with the introduction of a one weekly service to Vienna. Flights will operate once per week, each Saturday, starting November 2. Eurowings stationed a 150-seat Airbus A319 jet in Pristina last month and introduced flights to Basel and Geneva. Frequencies on services to Dusseldorf, Stuttgart, Munich, Hamburg, Hanover and Cologne have also been increased. Austria was Pristina's fourth-largest market in 2018, behind Switzerland, Germany and Turkey. Currently, Austrian Airlines maintains flights from Vienna to Pristina, and will operate the service nine times per week during the coming 2019/2020 winter season. Wizz is expanding in Vienna so this looks like the Lufthansa group trying to protect their lucrative PRN-Market. PRN needs Wizz so badly.

1 weekly flight in November. I am sure they will fly more often later.

ReplyDeleteBecause Switzerland has full access to the ECAA through a bilateral agreement. So any party that is member of ECAA can fly to Switzerland from any other member of the ECAA.

Anyway EW from/to VIE is effectively controlled by OS.

These flights have not been loaded into Eurowings booking system yet. Hence, the indirect flights. Wait until the correct flights are loaded onto their booking system and when cheaper booking classes become available.
DeleteIt appears to me that these flights may be a pre-emptive actions against possible future launch of VIE-PRN flights by Ryanair (through its Austrian subsidiary Lauda). Lauda's plans for Vienna seem very ambitious to me.
One thing I'm very happy about is the fact that Eurowings have opened their first base not just in the region (South-East Europe), but outside their home markets of Germany and Austria (excluding Palma that serves German and Austrian markets exclusively). This is really encouraging. Second, they serve primary airports of German cities. Thirdly, you can combine Eurowing flights from PRN and onwards flights from, for example, STR with EW or LH. I hope the same is the case with VIE and OS.
Nonetheless, the so-called 'potential' of the PRN will only be reached once Wizz Air opens a base to complement easyJet (longest serving major LCC at PRN), Eurowings, and Norwegian.
