Edelweiss schedules daily wide-body Pristina flights

Swiss carrier Edelweiss Air has begun operating all of its flights between Zurich and Pristina with its wide-body 315-seat Airbus A330-300 aircraft. Yesterday, the carrier ran a total of three flights between the two cities, all of which were on the A330 jet. On certain days, when the airline has more than one service between Zurich and Pristina, all flights will be operated by the wide-body aircraft. Switzerland continues to maintain its position as the busiest market out of Pristina, with 33% of all passengers either departing or arriving from the country in 2019. Zurich is the busiest route out of Kosovo, accounting for 16.1% of all travellers.

    I don't think there is any airport in the region achieving those results. The sole exception are them daily EK Boeing 773 flights to BUD.

      the daily widebody is only for the first week because there is a backlog of gastos on standby tickets. they do have scheduled widebody after but not on a daily bases.

      ATH is an exception because of it being an entry to the Greek islands.
      Given the size of PRN, having a daily widebody is an major achievement not reached by any other airport in the region.

      Don't forget, it's not only about demand: The EDW-Widebody-Fleet has been pretty much grounded the past months. In the summerseason, they usually fly to Northamerica, which is still under lockdown. So, in order to keep the typeratings of all your pilots, you need to bring the cockpit-crews in the air, or do expensive and useless training flights. So you rather move these aircraft and crews around, even on widebody-shorthaul

      If PRN-ZRH has reached to a point that it can sustain a 315-seater then this means this route has matured to such a level that it can now be compared to the busy BEG-ZRH route too. Of course a bit lower but still very busy route.

      ZRH-PRN is perfect for pilot-training: 2 rotations, 4 flights in one workday. It doesnt matter, if the plane is full. On weekends it might be, on weekdays, rather not. BEG is a different story, since this is LX-Territory, not a WK-Route.. and LX has other routes to put their widebodies on for "paid training" - I see the LX-Widebodies often on the LHR or ATH-Route.. there you might sell even some seats in C-Cl. Beside this, you have 4x B-777 rotating as cargoflights to China right now, so enough opportunities to fly the crews at least monthly....

      Of course, there is some demand on peak weekends for PRN and SKP... but never ever 2-3 widebody-flights and not on the weekdays. But deploying widebodies makes sense anyway, since Edelweiss needs to bring these aircraft/crews in the air on a certain frequency to keep all licences, etc. Also a plane needs some frequent movement!

      But I haven't heard of SKP receiving any WK A340. Yes, bigger planes do need to fly almost all the time because keeping them on the tarmac is just a waste of money. No wonder why we witnessed so many humanitarian flights because of Covid.
      It seems that PRN is getting busier and busier. Do you have any idea about how the situation in TIA with WK or LX or Switzerland is?

    Since Switzerland is imposing 10-day quarantine on all people returning from Serbia, Kosovo and Macedonia, all these plans are rubbish... they currently have 80% noshow/cancellation rate on these flight - many will never happen this summer... ;-/
