NEWS FLASH
The Croatian government and the City of Zagreb are in discussions over the construction of a high speed rail link between the city centre and the airport. The Croatian Minister for Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, Oleg Butković, said securing the financing for the project from European Union funds, as well as drafting the project documentation would likely take two years to complete, after which construction could begin. Previously, the city floated the idea of extending its tram network to the airport, however, those plans never materialised.
This would be fantastic but I think it will end up like the idea for the tram extension.
ReplyDeleteThe Tram link wasn't possible cause it requires agreement of Velika Gorica City hall and Zagreb, meaning Velika gorica, a town of around 64000 would have to pay partially for the link. Also, tram would be too slow, plan was to dig under the terminal and have an undergrouns tram stop which would then use Domovinski Most to cross and conect to city center, about 12-15km long line. Problem was that city and airport is situated in marsh area, too soft for underground tunnels, so they gave up on tram idea. Train idea is no longer an idea, they've signed a contract and will seek financing for the project. Construction on the new link expected to start in early 2024 and be completed by mid to late 2026.

The project is one of the major investments in the city, which also includes 540 bed 100 000sqm €300 million national children's hospital right next to location of never built university hospital which will also now be built with the assistance of EU funds. All 3 projects also includes 200 million kuna reconstruction project of rail line between Glavni Kolodvor and Zapadni Kolodvor, which are about 2km appart. The airport link will be part of high speed link between Rijeka and Zagreb that is currently being built and airport will be just small attachment on the side i presume to link in to this, not sure it'll be high speed though as there's a speed limit how fast train can go through a city i think the speed is only 80kmph. But even with 80km speed, it'll take only 10 min to city center by train. The airport link btw is expected to cost 300 million kuna or €40 million.

DeleteI'm guessing that the "high speed" part is important. Trams are slower then most trains because they are intended for inter-city use.
DeleteZAG just doesn't have the demand to justify the huge expense of 'high speed' rail to the city centre. That's why I said that extending the existing tram line to ZAG will be sufficient. Yeah it's not a 'high speed' dedicated line, and it will probably take 30 minutes or so, but that is enough.

Belgrade can do it easily. There is railroad just a mile away on the west side of the airport that goes to Batajnica and can connect passengers both from Belgrade and Novi Sad.
DeleteNo need. When Batajnica airport gets converted to a civilian airport it will already have 2 existing runways and a rail link. Belgrade is expanding, time to move the airport to a better location.

DeleteAnd how far do you think the railway connection is from the Zagreb Airport? 10 miles? It's also about a mile away wast of the main terminal in Velika Gorica.

ReplyDeleteI recently took a taxi to Zagreb Airport , I noticed the new motorway has a large centre alignment that looks like it is built for a tram way ...is this the plan??
