NEWS FLASH

Austria’s Klagenfurt Airport handled a total of 153.536 passengers in 2023 with a notable number of travellers from Slovenia. Situated about seventy kilometres north of Ljubljana Airport, Klagenfurt Airport reported that 18% of its passengers last year originated from Slovenia, totalling over 27.300 travellers. Klagenfurt is served by Austrian Airlines, which maintains operations to Vienna, while Ryanair runs year-round flights to London Stansted and seasonal operations to Alicante and Palma de Mallorca. Last week, Austrian introduced a seasonal winter service from Klagenfurt to Hamburg, which will run until early March. Ljubljana Airport has identified the close proximity of a number of airports as a challenge. Apart from Klagenfurt, airports such as Graz, Trieste, Venice, and Zagreb all benefit from a sizeable number of Slovenian travellers.

Actually I think TRS gets twice as many Slovenians as Klagenfurt. Also Venice.

Agreed. I use Trieste often and there are always plenty of Slovenian plates on parking - Koper, Postojna, Ljubljana, Kranj....

I wouldn’t be surprised if 1 MIO pax fly from near airports. Mostly Zagreb, Venice 2x and Trieste.

I have lived there and can say that half of the air travelers used Trieste. Most people I know used Alitalia.

I wouldn't bet all Slovenians parked at TRS airport are actually flying. Freccia Rossa high speed trains operate from there too and are super replacement for flights.

Slovenians are flying as crazy when flights are cheap. There is a Slovenian invasion for LC in Treviso e.g. for Marrakesh. My local friends (Treviso) are asking "how is it that they can travel anytime of they year (flying less in summer)? Are they not working? How can they take time off whenever they are cheap tickets available? We can't do so."

"Ljubljana Airport has identified the close proximity of a number of airports as a challenge"

Maybe lower the prices for LCCs and don't advertise your in house sweetshop instead of flights?
Also ffs, at least add all of the carriers to your website, where's AirBaltic, Norwegian, Iberia, and many others?

LJU has the lowest handling and landing fees in the region and on top of that you can get 6-12 months waiver if you start a new scheduled line.

can confirm, I was one of them going via Klagenfurt last year.
Prices were one third to Scandinavia than from Ljubljana on OS, vs any airline. It was a no brainer. Same time as our departure to Vienna, there was also one to London. Lots of Slovenes in terminal waiting for that plane, also quite a few going to Vienna on the OS.

Have used Trieste many times this year and it was almost always mostly Slovenes using flights. Shame that Ljubljana Airport is unable to attract airlines and passengers. Hoping for an improvement.

No one ever wrote that. Not even Analiticar. People wrote, me included, that Croatians use LJU. And Slovenians use ZAG. But neither Croatians are majority in LJU, nor Slovenians are majority in ZAG. Not on one single flight and not on one single carrier. But some people obviously are a bit slower and not entirely capable of comprehending this, not so difficult to understand, reality.

Many Slovenians can take time off whenever they want. In Italy public servants can take vacation only end of July and August and around New Year. You can't have a holiday anytime.

It would be interesting to see how many Austrians are flying from LJU. Koroška (Carinthia) was a significant market for Adria Airways in former times. There was even a direct bus from Klagenfurt to LJU airport a few times per day, aligned to the flight schedule. But now we have the impression that passenger flow is mainly one way to Austria. :-(

The problem of Fraport management is that they see north Italy, south Austria, and Croatia mainly as a threat, but not as an opportunity.
