Wizz Air this week launched flights from its base in Podgorica to Ljubljana, marking the airline’s second route linking two cities within the former Yugoslavia, following the introduction of services between Skopje and Ljubljana. The new route will operate four times per week with the Airbus A321 aircraft. It will compete directly against Air Montenegro's three weekly flights.
Commenting on the new route, Andras Szabo, Network Officer East at Wizz Air, said, “We greatly value the trust our passengers place in us when choosing to fly with Wizz Air, and we remain committed to continuously expanding our portfolio of affordable and attractive destinations from Slovenia. We are confident that Podgorica will prove to be a popular destination, providing convenient access to Montenegro’s stunning coastline, spectacular natural scenery and unique cultural experiences”. Jugen Deischl, Managing Director of operator Fraport Slovenija, added, “Despite ongoing uncertainty in the aviation market, Ljubljana Airport continues to record steady growth in both passenger traffic and route development. The launch of Wizz Air’s new service to Podgorica further strengthens our network and reflects airlines’ continued confidence in Ljubljana as a destination. We are particularly pleased to deepen our cooperation with Wizz Air, as it enhances connectivity for passengers while supporting both tourism and business demand in the region. With a promising summer schedule ahead, we remain focused on further developing our route network and improving travel options for our passengers”.

ReplyDeleteWizz Air’s Network Officer, Andras Szabo, said, “The potential of Slovenian aviation is very significant, and it is reaching far beyond the current flight availability on the market. If conditions were improved, especially access costs to the capital airport, there is huge potential for Slovenia. We are following it with interest but there must be an effort made to break through that situation and that would be very helpful and beneficial for Slovenia”.

Can you imagine mr Szabo saying, “well, Slovenia’s potential is next to nothing, we are going to try but I deeply doubt that we can change that anytime. We are so desperate and I am firmly against start of any operation but Slovenian government is pushing us so badly that we can’t resist!” No hope here, sorry!

DeleteBest next step for Slovenia would be a Wizz air base in LJU, with additional destinations like BER, PRG, MAD, PRN, CRL, SOF, some destinations in South Spain and leisure seasonal destinations complementing or replacing charters. Maybe some Italian routes would work as well. Forget base in MBX due to limited opening time and bad infrastructure, but a route or two might work (starting with London for sure and marketing is as an access to Zagreb, Graz, Ljubljana).

DeleteSJJ by far should be the first one they consider. It's insanely hard to reach by bus (8-10hr) for a country that has 10% of their population from Bosnia and many students
DeleteBut on that route they would be competing against decades of Bosnaexpres and similar bus companies that have organized regular transfers between Slovenia and Bosna for cheap. There is a reason Adria had double daily flights with less than 50% load factor on CRJ7.
DeleteAdria's route was similar to OU's route with transfers being the main target. Wizz Air could easily take up the battle with bus companies. Also, I don't think that many tourists would use the bus, but visiting both Slovenia and BiH during a journey in the region is quite common for tourists.

Deletedont want to be cinican but it will probably "stay" 4 weekly because i dont see how the other airline can compete with them. Would be wise if they use their 3 weekly to somewhere else where they have no competition
DeleteCant wait to see new intra Ex-yu route from Wizz air , hopefully they can make those intra routes more affordable and accesiuble for people living in the region. Driving by car and waiting on summer borders its not always a good solution
