Passengers to enjoy new terminal even sooner
Skopje’s new multi million Euro terminal will open its doors two days ahead of schedule, on Tuesday September 6. Originally, it was planned for the terminal, which will handle all of Skopje Airport’s customers, to open on Macedonian Independence Day on September 8. However, the airport’s management believes that the new terminal will get more publicity if it is opens ahead of the public holiday. The first airlines and passengers to use the new terminal should be those arriving and departing in the afternoon. The new terminal has 23 check-in desks, 6 air bridges and stretches over 40.000 square metres. When construction started last year it was planned for work to be completed by October 23.

Meanwhile, Macedonia’s Minister for Transport and Communications, Mile Janakieski, held a bilateral meeting with his Turkish counterpart last Friday in Skopje. Both ministers signed an agreement which further liberalises the possibility of airlines commencing flights to each other’s countries. The agreement also aids TAV’s hunt to find a foreign airline to base an aircraft in Skopje. The Macedonian Civil Aviation Agency has now also joined TAV in its bid to find an airline willing to make Skopje its hub from the 2011/12 winter season, according to a source from the agency.

I remember discussings we had about the fear of too much turkish influence in the former ex-YU..

so here we go....what s so bad about it.... built new terminal ahead of schedule...
in EU Ljubljana they are trifling around since years and Zagreb should have a terminal like Skopje two decades ago...

congratulations to Skopje.. and enjoy travelling

I just visited the airport with a colleague who is working there. He showed me around what the airport will look like, so I had a sneak preview. This will definitely be the best looking airport in the whole Balkans.

    Congratulation Skopje !
Your new terminal is the best ....without any doubt !!!!!
In future Belgrade will be ashamed of its 3rd world airport !
Instead of cosmetical surgery ...we tear it down !
Then we build something as beautiful as Skopje !
Greetings from Belgrade ,beautiful city but with an airport looking like a garbage dump !

The new terminal is looking awesome. It's not an architectural gem, but will be very functional -- much like most of American airports, nothing special but they just work.

"The new terminal has 23 check-in desks, 6 air bridges" -- hmm, come October/November the new terminal will be a very empty place. That will not change quickly even if a small SKP-based airline is set-up. In the meantime, I am keeping an eye at airport fees.

What happens if the airline doesn't want to use the gates? Will they be parked there or somewhere opposite?

By the way, does anyone have the total pax numbers for SKP?

Despite a bit of healthy competition in the region it is obvious that this is the largest airport project in ex-yu at the moment. It should be celebrated as first of more to come. As far as I can tell from the webpage at least Zagreb and Pristina are due to build brand new terminals, may this airport lead the way. I think that a single ex-yu airline could have enough business (13 million passangers) to create profitable overseas operations with Belgrade and Zagreb as hubs. Merger of the three biggest ones? Alternatively, everyone can feed a new, small, widebody fleet airline. Dreaming I know but Skopje airport with 6 million passenger capacity was beyond a dream until recently as well.
