Soon in Belgrade
The low cost Pegasus Airlines intends to launch scheduled flights from Istanbul to Belgrade from October 2, pending government approval. The airline has requested to be issued a license and has been granted slot times at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport. The complex bilateral air procedures between Serbia and Turkey may delay the license grant, however, it is expected to be issued within the next two weeks.

Pegasus, which will operate flights from Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen Airport, will add heat on both Jat Airways and Turkish Airlines which operate flights to and from Istanbul’s main airport, Ataturk. Jat’s loads to Istanbul have been hit by Turkish Airlines’ double daily flights between the two cities over the current summer season. Furthermore, Turkish relies on a significant number of transit passengers on the route. Over the 2012/13 winter season, which begins on October 28, Belgrade will have 19 weekly flights to Turkey’s largest city.

Pegasus will operate four weekly flights between Istanbul and Belgrade with its Boeing 737-800. The flights will be inaugurated as part of the airline’s push into Eastern Europe with new flights to Kiev and Batumi in Georgia to be launched at the same time as Belgrade. Tickets will be on sale once the Serbian Civil Aviation Directorate issues a license to the no frills airline. Pegasus has been operating summer charters to Serbia over the past few years. Within the former Yugoslavia it maintains scheduled flights to both Skopje and PriÅ¡tina.

    Fantastic news!!

Pegasus is the best low-cost I've ever flown on. Plus, sabhia is a more convenient airport for me.

Looking forward to cheap fares to Istanbul!!

Great news. Hope TK will finally suffer from some serious competition from BEG to the rest of Turkey and Middle-East. Pegasus is a good company.

Nice to see another competitor join the seemingly lucrative market between BEG and IST.

TK has a great product. Pegasus will fly to SAW also. It s the other side of Istanbul and not convenient for most of the passangers. i dont think that TK will suffer from this competition.

I agree with all of you, I don't think Pegasus will take (at least not significantly) any TK or Jat passengers. They are very good company, as it has been said, one of the best low cost and definitely the best LC I have used! cheap fares and different side of Istanbul will attract new passengers and new category of passengers.

Jat should go daily to IST, even with an Atr if needed. Only that way they can compete with TK.

Well, for one, JAT will be loosing 3-4 yearly round trips from this passenger.

Pegasus to Zurich is as low as 50 euros. For those prices, I don't think anyone will mind the hour 5-euro bus ride to the European side of Istanbul from SAW.

TK will aggressively lower the prices and then Pegasus will go. This is very typical for them. I don't think there is a very high demand between BEG and IST in comparison with OTP or BUD for example.

Can you justify that with some facts or statistics? There are significantly more weekly flights from/to IST from BEG than BUD.

Another month with great results! If they keep this king of growth for August then they are not only going to pass the 2.000.000 mark but will handle 2.300.000 passengers!
