Zagreb still waiting on its new terminal
The construction of Zagreb Airport’s new multi million euro terminal will begin in September 2013, representing yet another delay in a line of many. Charles Paradis, the head of Bouygues Construction Concession, which forms part of the international consortium in charge of building and running the new terminal, has announced that construction is likely to begin sometime at the end of summer, “most probably in September”. The consortium is still waiting to receive necessary permits in order for construction to begin, although it is believed it is also yet to secure necessary finances. The price tag of the project’s first phase will amount to 236 million euros, while the thirty year concession fee adds up to 1.9 billion euros.
According to the concession contract, signed with the Croatian government, the airport’s new operators are obliged to begin construction by April 11, 2013 at the latest. While the Croatian government can sanction or even terminate their contract with the French centred consortium for breaching the deadline, the move is highly unlikely as it could jeopardise the ratification of the country’s European Union accession agreement, which France is yet to fully approve.
Despite the delays, the architectural design of the new terminal has been finalised, though it is yet to be revealed to the public. Once construction starts, it must be completed within 1.095 days (three years). The airport’s new owners anticipate that the new state of the art facilities will turn Croatia’s busiest hub into a regional powerhouse and a transit point within the Balkans. Plans to build a new terminal at Zagreb Airport have been ongoing for years.

So based on what criteria were they selected by the Croatian government?
All the permits have been given, its an old news regurgitated, Air Force has started knocking its building down, land should be entirely cleared by the end of March or mid April, developers have been given few months after that to start construction.
DeleteDevelopers are saying they can start in May, but ideally it would be feasible for them to start in early September.
Most likely scenario is that land is cleared by the end of April, land preparation, digging and laying grounds will start in early may and be completed by the end of August and terminal construction should than start in earnest in early September.
Why are they spending so much on renovating the Departure lounge in the present terminal? Will it be used for low cost carriers once the new building is open?

DeleteWell, even if construction begins tomorrow, its going to be years before terminal is operational. Just look at NDIA, and they don't have any financing issues!
DeleteZagreb airport even with the new terminal will still have smaller capacity than Belgrade. I think an extension of the current terminal should be sufficient for the next 15 years but hey, EU membership costs, even for constructing empty buildings with huge delays. Finally French will pull out and find a way to sanction the Croatian government for the contract cancellation.
DeleteIt was planned since 2007 to expand current terminal cause it was too small to handle 2.5 million passengers. Terminal will be expanded to 22500sqm and in future it'll be used by the low cost airlines, once new terminal has reached maximum capacity old terminal can be terned down, and new terminal built in its place, but that's not any time soon, perhaps in 2040.
DeleteCurrent terminal will be able to handle around 3.5 million passengers, should suffice for next few years, until new terminal is ready in 2015.
I don't see Zagreb reaching 3.5 million anytime soon. I have nothing against Zagreb but this seem is gonna be just a huge waste of money.
DeleteWell you might say so, but Zagreb is a capitol of a country that is in NATO and soon in the EU, main getaway in the country and out, with growing business and economic links, increasing income and thus the living standard of average Croat, as well as Zagreb becoming very popular tourist destination, things for Zagreb look really bright. 3.5 million passengers will be achieved by 2015, and 5.7 million passengers by 2020, and these are conservative estimates.
DeleteKLM, SAS, Swiss, CSE, LOT, Iberia, AlItalia, Air Lingus, all coming back to Zagreb in 2013 and 2014, with Qatar, Easy Jet, German ?Wings increasing their steak at Zagreb Airport, and with potential return for Wizz Air, as well Increased seasonal flights by Korean, JAL and potential return of Malaysian in 2014, as well as number of other smaller airlines Zagreb can easily expect to reach 3.5 million passengers.

Zagreb is becoming very popular tourist destination, in 2011 Zagreb had 755000 visitors and 1.24 million nights, in 2013 800 000 Visitors are bound to visit the city and numbers are going to improve even more in 2014 and 2015.
Zagreb is important business location for the entire region where all major IT firms have their head Officers, Microsoft, Google, Facebook...
Investment in to Croatian Tourism and economy is growing and with recession ending this year things are looking up.

CSA, LOT, Iberia, SAS and Alitalia are in deep problems and they will cut up to 50% of their routes (CSA already cut 50%, Iberia announced that they will cut 30% this year, Alitalia, SAS and LOT declare that they are almost bankrupt and ask for state help). Aer Lingus is almost sold to Ryanair (it is question of day) and Ryanair announced that most of routes will be given to British and flybe because of antimonopoly request. Malaysian cut 87 destinations all together in last two years including biggest European metropolis, but will come to Zagreb? You still did not get picture?
Reality are Egyptair, Emirates, flybe, Wizzair, Tarom, Aegean, Ryanair, Vueling, Transavia, Pegasus… but sure not those you mentioned.

Also Croatian Government told developers that they must start works on new terminal by late April and deadline is end of 2015, ideally May 2015.
French firm in question has taken a too big a bite and normally if EU wasn't facing recession things would have been much smoother for company and gaining required finances, but the fact that cost of entire project is 326€ million excluding 150€ million for Airport city which also needs to be constructed with in 3 years of new terminal being opened things are hard for developers.
Yes, France ratified the Croatian accession treaty. (Not in December, but in January).
