Shareholders to vote on new terminal tomorrow
Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport’s shareholders will tomorrow decide whether to go ahead with the planned construction of a second terminal building. The decision will rest on the minority shareholders as the Slovenian Securities Market Agency has denied the airport’s operator, the Slovenian government, the right to voting. The minority share owners have mixed feelings about the multi million euro investment but are uneasy about the government’s plans to privatise the airport. On the other hand, the management is firmly in favour of the new terminal with CEO Zmago Skobir recently announcing that, “A new terminal would ensure long term traffic development at the airport". He added, "Today, during the busiest part of the day, the airport has insufficient capacity to handle all passengers as the terminal was built in 1973”.
The minority shareholders fear that such a massive investment, at a time of economic hardship, would be unjustified. Furthermore, they believe the money could be better spent. In the lead up to the vote, the airport has been unwilling to comment on the issue. The Slovenian government has also refused to state whether it is for or against the project. Shareholders were originally planned to grant approval for the terminal building in early June, however, the vote was put off in light of the government’s plan to privatise the airport.
Earlier this year, Ljubljana Airport signed a contract to co-fund a 73 million euro new terminal to be in use by January 2015. The airport management team has since said the project could be completed for less than sixty million euros. The new terminal, which is to be built next to the existing passenger building, would cover an area of 31.200 square metres. Furthermore, the airport would have the capacity to handle 1.800 passengers per hour compared to the current 700 passengers.
How busy can a day be at Ljubljana, srsly?
ReplyDeleteProblem is there are always 7-8 departures within an hour (or even more) becuase of the wawes Adria oeprates (LJ-south-LJ-north-LJ-south..) and that is when terminal gets too small (mornings, noons, evenings).
ReplyDeleteBut in my view I think terminal could be increased towards the garage and problem could be solved in less expensive way.
I would love to see a new terminal but times (economical) are not too good to make a decision for such a huge expense atm but...
Why not expand the current terminal building by adding two airbridges? It would also mean that they could add two exits underneath. Couldn't that solve the current problem?
ReplyDeleteProblem is check in area, baggage are behind the scene, security area, waiting area.... problems are not air bridges (there is a lot of stands - buses available;)

The key is: build = easy big corruption money: get loans (who cares who pays we (old bosses and company) will not), get money that is not necessary to give back, exagerate the price of the work, divide the money "over" among mafia friends.

Seems like Balkan "biznis" mentality has nicely spread to Slovenia.
DeleteLjubljana and Slovenia do not need any new terminal. We have now brand new terminal in Maribor with capacity at least 600 pax per hour and there is motorway between LJ and MB, only 1 hour away, airport is located just near motorway LJ-Vienna-Budapest (3 km away). So some flight could start from MBX and both airport will have enough job, for example some attractive flights which are interested also South Styria till Graz) by Austrians.

Only 3 (?!) charter seasonal connections out of Maribor.
Maribor and Ljubljana are so close by motorway.

ReplyDeleteIt seems that we have the first victim of Air Serbia's aggressive expansion. I believe that Olympic Air will be discontinuing its Belgrade flights. There are no flights in Amadeus for the summer season. I would not be surprised as the airline has been shrinking in recent times and they can't compete with double daily flights offered by Air Serbia.
Personally I am very sad to hear this. I remember flying with them back in the 1990s when they used to send their B737-200 to BEG. :(
Many flights listed on Amadeus are for 6 months. I wouldn't worry too much.
DeleteTrue but when it comes to Olympic it is more likely that they will suspend their flights rather than keep them.
DeleteAgree, while I am happy for Air Serbia to expand as much as possible, it would be sad to lose Olympic again, because any competition on any route cannot be bad. for passengers. We'll see, plenty of time by next summer.

Olympic will not be the last one to pull the plug on the Belgrade route.

I don't see Germanwings and Norwegian pulling out. Croatia Airlines could survive in Belgrade thanks to travel agencies during the summer months which will fill its seats.
DeleteHowever, I do see both Tarom and Adria eventually pulling out. My guess is that Adria will withdraw before, or right after, the summer season. Then again, I fear that Adria is operating without a concise business strategy, a bit like Jat until recently.
