NEWS FLASH

The governing Party of Democratic Action (SDA) in Bosnia and Herzegovina has unveiled its plans to relocate Sarajevo Airport. It comes in the lead-up to this weekend’s general election in the country. The SDA has proposed for the new site of the airport to be located in Visoko, some thirty kilometres north of Sarajevo. The party argues that due to its current location, the airport is unable to meaningfully expand its infrastructure, while the urban neighbourhood that surrounds it poses further limitations. The idea to move Sarajevo Airport to a new location has been floated for decades. The airport is currently in the midst of an expansion, which has been severely delayed. It recently submitted an expansion plan to the government of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Federation, which received approval. The SDA’s plan calls for the airport’s relocation by 2035, while the existing site would be turned into a park and lake.

It's important to highlight that includes new terminal building that hasn't been completed yet and it's still not used. The current capacity is 900.000 pax while SJJ already expects 1.4/5 million pax this year. It's a big problem.

SJJ is quietly becoming the next big thing. Such an underrated city and country with history.
The progress achieved during the last years is simply great.
I wish BiH all the best.

Yes, it's becoming the next big thing, that is why Wizz Air's network there collapsed. Must be from all the demand. lolz

How is the tourism situation in Sarajevo? I’m admittedly being selfish but I’d like to visit before it becomes too touristy

It will never happen in the next 100 years. Look how long it's taken to build the small extension to the current terminal.

Butmir is hardly centre of Sarajevo, but by that definition you can easily add Warsaw and Bratislava (just off the top of my head)

Dear pozdrav iz Rijeke, I love your comments! A real expert.

I would add Berlin Tegel to your list, Berlin Tempelhof closed in 2008... Tegel was just 11 km from the city center.

      Kind regards from Munich :)

Not this year but with the current development it's very possible SJJ surpasses SKP within next 2-4 years.

This is election campaign nonsense. They have so many other infrastructural projects that are incredibly important... Part of it is getting into the city center faster from the Vogosca side, which is crucial to make this potential project worthwhile. While Visoko is quick to get to, getting from the highway exit to at least Ciglane, can take a long time.
