NEWS FLASH

Flights between Belgrade and Baku will be introduced by the end of 2023 according to Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vučić. Speaking in the Azeri capital last week, Mr Vučić noted, “You need three hours and ten minutes [from Belgrade] to Baku, to visit the beautiful city on the Caspian Sea. This is excellent for Serbian tourists and businesspeople but also Azeri businessmen to visit Serbia. Therefore, after Chicago, another important route will be introduced in 2023”. Air Serbia has previously said it is considering the Caucasus region for further expansion. “We are looking at countries like Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia, for which Belgrade would be a good option for connecting to Europe”, Air Serbia’s CEO, Jiri Marek, said this summer. There have been ongoing talks to establish flights between Serbia and Azerbaijan for almost a decade. Serbia plans to start importing natural gas and electricity from Azerbaijan next year.

I wouldn't be so sure about it, maybe from next winter season maybe. The rotations are as long as to LIS for example. With so many new routes they're already reaching the capacity limits even with the additional wet leases...

Well...as much as everyone would love LIS to be introduced by AS, at the end of the day AS is owned by the government and the government is making closer ties with the Azeri government so they need this flight.

Maybe Azeri carriers don't want to fly routes at politicians' whims.

So true, AZAL is especially know as a commercially run carrier with minimal government involvement. ;)

I was flying on a route BEG- GYD and back for whole year , on a monthly basis, even twice a month..Taking different carriers, but mostly Turkish, also LOT and Lufthansa, Wizz as well via AUH..I haven't seen more then 3-4 pax from Serbia on this route during this entire year, flew around 20 times..So I'm not really sure Baku would work for AS..Plus Azerbaijan still dodn't cancel visas for Serbian citizens, although we canceled for them in 2018, than again signed a contract for mutual !? visa cancelation in Baku in June 2021 ( probably for their internal politics, since Azeri didn't need visas to enter Serbia already for long time), and still nothing happened with visa cancelation

Obtaining a visa for Azerbaijan is an easy process, electronic visa are issued, visiting the embassy is not necessary. As long as you have not visited Nagorno-Karabakh before, you have no troubles.

It doesn't matter if obtaining a visa is easy or not, the problem is 'cause it still exists for Serbian citizens
