NEWS FLASH

The construction of Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport’s new inserted runway is nearing completion. A Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) - an aviation document informing all carriers of important and urgent messages - has been issued indicating the introduction of the new runway 12R/30L, new taxiway D1-D7 and taxiway Y from February 23. From that same date, radio navigation and landing aids will be introduced for the new runway as well as changes to navigation procedures at the airport. The new runway is 3.500 metres in length and will replace the existing one, which will be overhauled in the coming period. Once its reconstruction is completed, the inserted runway will become a parallel taxiway besides the original runway. The two will be linked through a new system of taxiways, including four rapid exit taxiways (RETs). The inserted runway will also be used in the future, should the main one be incapacitated to handle aircraft for whatever reason. The overhaul of the existing main runway will commence this year. Belgrade Airport’s existing runway was built in 1962 and was extended by an additional 400 metres to 3.400 metres in 1978. It has been determined that its weight bearing capacity is no longer sufficient.

Not really. Oreginal plan was to have second runway build on the space between Surcin road and the Surcin itself paralel to the current runway(If you look at google maps you can see). There was one person from BEG airport who came up with this briliant idea of buidling an inserted runway beacuse it would be somewhat cheaper solution than the oreginal plan. Everyone else who knows anything about this matter was against this stupid idea, but only takes one idiot in wrong postion....

Actually the land outside of the airport is owned by mafia and too expensive for building a runway there.

I also don't understand this as written. What's inserted runway? Are they saying there will be three runways?

Three??? Oh I see what you mean - if you slice a runway like a baguette into two halves and then insert another runway just like inserting a prosciutto into sliced baguette, then you get three runways.

No, there won't be three, there will be just two runways: original one and this new one inserted between original runway and original taxiway.

      Nicely said bro.
And then they will resurface the original runway, as written above.

It is written very clearly in the article. Don't understand how it is difficult for you to understand.

Don’t get upset so easily, people have the right not to understand.

It’s called “inserted runway” because it’s positioned (inserted) between the existing runway and a parallel taxiway that goes along the existing runway.

It’s not a common way of building a second runway because it doesn’t permit simultaneous use of the two runways, but is still justified if you’re constrained with building space (like Gatwick), or, like is the case for Belgrade, you still don’t have enough flights to justify the enormous costs for building an entirely independent runway, and on the other hand you cannot live with the risk of having a single runway at your main international airport, plus you need to thoroughly refurbish your existing runway, then the inserted one is a reasonable choice.

I believe it will now be easier to understand the article.

You can still have two runway operations like at Pearson CYYZ where you can position and takeoff while second one is used for landing . It is not as efficient as two fully separated runways but this scenario would increase number of operations.

Such a scenario (one runway for departures, and the other for landings) would not increase the total throughput because both runways depend on the same taxiways, therefore in any scenario an aircraft after landing would have to cross the runway for departing traffic, alternatively, departing traffic would queue to cross the landing runway. It’s a nightmare scenario greatly reducing the aerodrome safety level.

Be also aware that the runway throughput in Belgrade with the current taxiway configuration is above 40 operations per hour. With the high-speed exit taxiways that are under construction, the runway throughput will increase to ~ 55 operations per hour. Today, at peak hour in August, there’s hardly 20 operations, and there’s less than 4 hours in a peak day with such a load. Single runway capacity in Belgrade will be way above the demand for at least another decade.

Belgrade Airport solved problem to have spear "Insert" runway. Unfortunately space between old and new runway is about 140 meters short to be posible to permitted simultaneously take off and landing. Inserted runway will be mostly use as taxiway "deluxe" and hse as runway as in demand. In next 30 years, antil build New Belgrade International Airport, present fasciitis will be enough... 🛫🌐✈

Why they don't turn the new runway as the main one?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Anonymous02:03

Because then the current runway would serve no purpose, while this way they will get an overhauled runway and a parallel taxiway in the future (and rapid exit taxiways)

Will they use the same ILS and have an "offset" type of approach? How will that work? I doubt they will install a new ILS system for such a short period of time.

ILS for runway 12R (inserted runway in the direction southeast) is already installed and will be operational as of the same date as the runway itself.
