NEWS FLASH

Croatia abolished internal air border checks on March 26, almost three months after it entered the Schengen Area on January 1. The occasion was marked by Croatia Airlines at Frankfurt Airport, with the service to Zagreb becoming its first Schengen Area operation. Flights between Croatian airports and Schengen Area member states are now considered as domestic services. This means there is no longer border control upon departure and arrival between Croatia and Schengen Area members. The development has resulted in Croatian airports adjusting passenger flows inside their terminals. The delay in implementing the Schengen Area rules at airports was based on a prior agreement between all parties involved for technical reasons.

Does anyone know how the layout of Zagreb airport will change? It seems like 1/3 of flights will be non-Schengen, so I wonder how services like lounges, cafes, restaurants will be split.

The “old” domestic section was very primitive and seemed temporary

@Anonymous14:07 currenttly terminal is split half for domestic/EU flights, but plan is to extend right pier by adding four additional passenger boarding bridges. Expansions known as phase 2a and 2b. 2 of which will be for wide body aircraft and 2 for single aisle aircraft. So the future set up will be 6 passenger bridges/12 gates for Schengen passengers and 6 for non-Schengen passengers. Expansion will be financed partially with the EU funding. Not sure when the works will start, but could be later next year. So current set up is only temporary solution.
