PHOTOS: Belgrade Airport opens overhauled A wing

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport has completed work on the overhaul of it’s A wing departures area, which has not been upgraded for the better part of forty years. It marks the completion of the redevelopment of all of Belgrade Airport’s gates, with departure gates A6 to A10 now open and architecturally in line with all other VINCI operated airports with an open space concept. Furthermore, two bus gates within the A pier are now accessible for use again, while there is also space for retail and food and beverage outlets which will be moved in at a later date. The redeveloped A pier also features an additional floor, stretching up to gate A9, which is used by arriving passengers. The redevelopment is part of the reconstruction of 15.000 square metres of the passenger terminal, along with the 40.000 square metre terminal expansion. As a result, Belgrade Airport now boasts 24 gates with jet bridge access, as well as eight bus gates (five in the C pier and three in the A pier) for a total of 32 gates. The next phase of VINCI’s project includes the construction of an additional four C pier jet bridge gates.

The development comes just days after the airport opened its new runway, and shortly after the opening of its new central processor building. The construction of the new access plateau in front of the terminal buildings is ongoing and expected to be completed by the end of the month.

Other projects which are continuing include the construction of a brand new central shopping plaza, which will be positioned behind security.

Furthermore, work on the expansion of the check-in area is advancing. It will be combined with the recently opened 28 check-in desks in the central processor. Overall, the airport will boast some ninety check-in desks.

Construction is also taking place in Terminal 1 near the tour operator counters and part of the check-in desks.

Within the departures area, work on overhauling the part of the terminal which formally housed the transfer desk, between gates A1 and C1, has begun. The transfer desk has temporarily been moved between gates C2 and C3.

Belgrade Airport and Air Serbia are part of a government committee working on the installation of eGates, which will enable users to simply scan their travel documents to be passed through for facial recognition. The technology is already there but is subject to preparations between the Serbian government and the European Union. In the first phase, passengers travelling from Serbia to the EU and vice versa will have the ability use the eGates. Work at passport control in the arrivals area is also under way, with old passport booths now being dismantled to make way for new ones and an expanded passport control area. Furthermore, construction is continuing in the arrivals hall to enable the use of the newly installed automated baggage handling system.

someone please tell me that I didn't see old bridges on A6-10 and that A10 will also have a second floor

A10 won't have a second floor because when passengrs disembark they will go up the stairs at gate A9. There is no need for it.

Air bridges will be replaced in fall.

Will they have 28 or 30 gates with airbridges when the expansion is done for this time?!

Seen that at other airports too. Water is a basic human necessity, and all airports should have ample FREE drinking fountains.

Agree wholeheartedly! My home airport YVR (Vancouver International) has a number of water fountains in front of every washroom location.

    6. @23:00 it is not about water bottle cost, it is about a fact that I meet to throw away that bottle. And once I past security I need to do that again. And then do it twice on another airport where my stop over is. There are 100 people on one flight and there are 100 flights... Do you get it now?

I think 'shopping area' could be the key to overall experience. if they do a good job there, I think passengers will remember that the most. It looks like it will be big and 'airy' (I hope)..........overall I think BEG, once they finish all the work should look good, much better vs. old. Maybe not vauuu effect, but that is OK.

Delivery of jet bridges is late, while BEG is in desperate need to have all gates open for the season. The best short term solution was to touch up the old bridges to hold out the season before being replaced.

The new interior of A pier looks really nice now once the whole A gates have been finished. Now Vinci should really finally finish the access of the new terminal and the passport control in the arrivals as these 2 points are mess and will be even bigger mess soon if they aren't finished.
Oh, and the toilets!!! Someone should really pay attention to this!!! Its grose!

I flew from there yesterday. Not zero space at all. They did the right thing with the open space concept and it is much more comfortable and much better than before. You can't widen the corridor. The alternative would be to knock down the entire building. But I suggest you actually try using it before spitting on it.

Nice, but the fake wood floors are already falling apart. Chipping, bubbling, scuffed up everywhere. The architect clearly did not opt for a floor that could withstand a high traffic area! It is embarrassing. I hope they fix it. I also look forward to seeing how they will unite the facades in some capacity. Now it feels like an awkward assemblage of three conjoined buildings.
