Zagreb Airport has said that approximately 5% of its total passengers are from Slovenia. It comes as Croatia’s busiest airport announces a new bus service from August 1 departing downtown Ljubljana via Novo Mesto to Zagreb's main bus station from which Slovenian travellers will have complimentary transfer to the airport. Zagreb Airport estimates it handled around 150.000 Slovenian passengers last year and expects the figure to reach 200.000 this year. “We do not keep data on the nationality of passengers. This estimate is based on statistics of parked cars at the airport and the origin of sold air tickets”, Zagreb Airport said. Approximately some 550 Slovenian passengers are currently passing through Zagreb Airport on a daily basis.
5% is not a small number at all given the size and population of Slovenia. Still ZAG, needs to work in creating more routes.

DeleteI genuinely thought it was around 10-20% of the total. Now that it appears it is less than 5% it is bit disappointing, but opportunity for more Slovenian passengers. I wonder if 10-15% is achievable with in next 10 years.

DeleteIf car plates show many Slovenian pax there are much more of them, as many people park their cars on more cheaper parking areas near the airport and far more are brought by relatives. Especially from the eastern part of Slovenia where driving to ZAG is a piece of cake.
DeleteAgree, many pax from eastern Slovenia are transported by friends or relatives. It is also more secure to ride to ZAG than to LJU, since SLO highways are a kind of Russian roulette with daily incidents and congestions. You are never sure to arrive to LJU on time. Of coure the better connections from ZAG also play an important role.

What do you mean not sure if we use same highways?? Getting to Ljubljana in the morning is an absolute nightmare and there is always some works on it or crashes. Barely any day of the week that there is no kilometers traffic jams
Delete12:28 - For sure we do, just many not the same sections. From Maribor or Murska Sobota is a completely different experience than from the surroundings of Ljubljana. The same applies to western part. Monitor traffic information more often to get insight into real state of things.

I also use KLM all the time from ZAG and pretty sure many other Slovenians do since we don't have them in LJU and only have like 3 weekly Transavia flights which is horrible number
DeleteIf a car is parked in ZAG, that means, they fly fm and to ZAG. So is that already counted in those numbers or are this just departures fm ZAG? If not, than wld be double that number, plus all those without cars. A friend of mine flies ZRH-ZAG-ZAG and travels to Novo Mesto all the time, so his ticket is purchased with a swiss IP and also not shown in this statistic.

ReplyDeleteThis would be great news from Zagreb and Croatia if all those people from Slovenia then flew with Croatia Airlines, but their money is going to Ryan Air and Lufthansa cartel. that is the dissapointing part.
ReplyDeleteI use Croatian for flights to Copenhagen. Also used them for Barcelona and Dublin.
DeleteLufthansa cartel is the ultimate loser due to its ties with Fraport. Normally the cartel would operate half of the flights it has in LJU but Fraport pushes so hard that every member (airline) of the cartel is given homework to add more flights to LJU. And because the cartel's routes at LJU and ZAG overlap, Slovenians do not need to come to ZAG for cartel flights.
DeleteI am a Slovene and I can share my personal experience. From people I know (friends, coworkers, family), by my aproximation: 30% flights are from ZAG, 30% VIE, 20% VCE, 10% LJU, 10% GRZ. I fly mostly from GRZ and VIE, the number of flights I have taken from ZAG and LJU is the same (4x ZAG and 4x LJU).
ReplyDeleteI live in Slovenia and I used LJU quite a few times but never on a regular service. It was always a charter flight, even one with Adria few months before bancruption. As I fly quite often I primarily use ZAG for KLM, Qatar and Croatian, even Ryanair a few times. The other two airports I also use quite often are VIE and VCE.

Deletenow you need by the Train 1:49min from LJU main to Dobova and from Harmica to ZAG main you need 33 min, why they not put some ICE Train from LJUm to ZAGm!!! that would be great for HR and SLO as well

DeleteAgree with some ICE's to ZAG and stops in Zidani Most for the eastern connections. But it may be questionable due to the known "speed" of Slovenian railways. Journey from Maribor or Celje by train will take much more time than by car or GoOpti. The people from Murska Sobota are totaly out of the game for such connection. It is far more faster to get to ZAG by car for them. The same for Maribor. Probably for Celje could work.

There is a plan, Slovene railways plan to introduce service between Zagreb and Ljubljana, using one of their Flirt Trains, service should all go according to plans commence next year before high season, or at latest in 2025. Service will initially be limited to around 5 trains per day both ways, but can expand if demand is good. Service between two cities wasn't possible before cause both countries use different overhead power supply, Slovenia using 3Kv DC, Croatia is using 15 Kv AC.
This would be fantastic. New trains are really smooth and confortable the obly rhing is that it would take ages to cover the distance as the quality of Slovenian railways isn’t the best
DeleteWell, Croatian railways aren't doing fantastic job either, but section between Krsko to Zagreb is straight and fast, if IC trains run this route, they could without stopping be in Zagreb from Krsko in less than 15 min, speed limit is 160kmph, however it can be raised to 250kmph once new signalization is installed on the line on Croatian side, which is planned to be installed in next few years. Entire line between Dobobva and Zagreb is undergoing massive modernization, to speed up this section. Dobova which is in Slovenia, but section from there on is responsibility of HZ, Croatian Railways, so infrastructure upgrade on that section is a priority for HZ.
DeleteNightjet has also extended its Stuttgart - Venice route, to Zagreb via Ljubljana with the Venice - Ljubljana - Zagreb route being operated by Slovenian and Croatian railways under ÖBB's EuroNight.

ReplyDeleteI guess is not forbidden and it gives excellent information regarding arrivals/ departures, routes used and where/what/who to increase promote ...
in EU we have privacy laws, you can collect information on nationality, but not on individuals, so to disseminate and separate information on individuals, would just be time consuming and smaller airports can't afford that.

DeleteAirports can legally collect information about passengers' nationality only via surveys. Technically a passenger does not do directly business with the airport, but by the airline. Therefore airlines have the information about its passengers' nationality. Ground handling companies? No, they act on behalf of the airline and are not entitled to collect any information without the airlines' permission. Who else in the airport can collect information about passengers' nationality? Immigration police. Naturally. Who else? Duty free shops? Nope, they scan your boarding card during the payment but your nationality information does not exist in your boarding card, only your destination. So, long story short, only the passport police and the airlines have information about the airport passengers' nationality.
DeleteOf course they all have all your information but they can not sell it. People here usually spread lies. They do not look for your nationality dear Mujo but your residence. Just check program which scans car registration.

ReplyDeletePleso prijevoz added the new Ljubljana - Zagreb service to its website recently. And the price looks very good, 24 euros for a return trip all the way between Ljubljana and Zagreb Airport.

DeleteWell with LJU getting more and more flights these days it will be more difficult for ZAG to be competitive. They still have the upper hand with flights to Brindisi, Kos, Malaga... but for many these extra flights from LJU will become more convenient and attractive.
ReplyDeleteFor biggest part od Slovenians most conviniently is flying from Venice airport, not Zagreb. From there you can fly to almost all world destinations and prices are very competitive. Airport is one of the biggest is Italy and is very good connected with all types of transportation. All major airlines are flying to Venice, many of them even more times daily.
