NEWS FLASH

Ljubljana Airport is expected to handle some 150.000 passengers on charter flights this year, reaching figures achieved in the sector prior the coronavirus pandemic. Babett Stapel, the General Manager of airport operator Fraport Slovenija, said, “Charter traffic is recovering well, and this year it will already reach pre-pandemic levels. By the end of the year, we will count around 150.000 charter passengers who have flown or will fly to 39 holiday destinations. Overall, we will exceed pre-pandemic passenger numbers in 2026, and I can optimistically say that we expect healthy traffic growth from that point on as well”. This winter season, Slovenian tour operators are chartering flights to Jordan, Morocco, the Azores, Tenerife, Cape Verde islands, Mallorca, Malta, Madeira, Porto, Lisbon, Hurghada and Rovaniemi.

This is totally anecdotal but I flew out of LJU at the same time this flight was departing and heard a number of Spanish speakers in the lounge, they looked like older tourists. No idea if they got on this flight or another one however.

Not really, considering the airport was hit twice in the span of 6 months in 2019/20 (Adria collapse and COVID) they should be proud of the progress they're making.

a big part for current situation is on Fraport as well so I really don't get it why they should be proud on that.

No, I just don't know why all the negativity surrounding LJU all the time. The airport is doing fine, not great and not bad at all. It is unreasonable to expect it to become a giant hub, when there is no need for it to be based of the location. People are just pressed there is no LCC flying from it and they cannot buy 25€ ticket to every european destination they've imagined (the same complains they were when Adria flew). And yes, I rather see airport develop slowly and with a vision than becoming a slave for a LCC company and not getting anything from it except for passenger numbers.

I've been on this site for some time now and all I read is this constant nagging about Ljubljana and it's slow recovery. Some of you need to give it a break, it seems that some people just don't get it that LJU is a small regional airport stuck between Venice, Wienna, Munich and Zagreb and with rather good roads...

I live in Slovenia half way between Lju and Zag, I usually go where the price is better, but I mostly use my car to get around 500 km in every direction. Why would I take a flight to Vienna if I can get there in around the same time?

Anon 11:17 The problem is that some Slovenians are not willing to accept that fact (that LJU catchment area is limited and cannot reach the passenger numbers generated during Adria time with its transfer passengers and that it will logically remain toasted between Venice, Trieste and Zagreb). And another issue is the approach of the majority of the commenters here: Enemy of my enemy is my friend!

those nagging are nagging on articles for other other airports as well. They found a topic for every airport and keep repeating it like a broken record: LJU- Fraport, ZAG - OU, BiH- chaos and so on and on

Figures are one thing, reality is another! Travel prices have risen enormously. Charter traveljs form LJU it is becoming a luxury in a way. Prices for travel from Austrian and German airports are not so high. Have a look at (FTI.DE) God forbid you travel alone, the prices from LJU are enormous, like a trip to Thailand for 3 weeks (before 2019). for example a 3* hotel on the Greek island of Lefkada, 7 days, 2020 somewhere around 790 EUR (the cheapest), this year 2023 around 950 EUR!!!! yes, for one week in a 3* hotel! well done Fraport (reason: taxes and kerosene price). I don't know where we are going, but this is not normal anymore! Where are the times when you traveled for 7 days, charter from LJU, 3* hotel, for 450 EUR, I don't think it will ever be so accessibly again, even after the end of the war in Ukraine

There is 21% of cumulative inflation in Slovenia alone from 2019 to 2023. That's one thing.
Average salary in 2019 was 1851 EUR gross, last month was 2174 EUR. Little less than 20% higher. So either you woke up yesterday or you don't first thing about business.
And no, you'll never be able to fly again for 450 EUR.

It's interesting to me that Ljubljana has flights (although charters) to Azores, Cape Verde islands, Madeira, Tenerife. And from Belgrade, no one ever mentioned to start those destinations (except sometimes Tenerife). Like they are forbidden...

Right! I ask myself this question many times. Also everyone around (I exclude smaller markets like Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro) have. Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Baltic countries. They all have, why not Serbia?

There are not even charters in Athens..... They have Reykjavik, Bahrain, Ibiza, Adis Ababa, Singapore. Greek tour operators organize quite a variety of offers. I've been browsing them recently and even found many vacations to Poland and the Czech Republic. Same for our neighbors, even LJU has long distance charters.
