Air Serbia readies for Embraer entry into service


Air Serbia is preparing to incorporate Embraer aircraft into its fleet as of next Monday, with Frankfurt tentatively scheduled as its first destination. Later in the day, the 108-seat E190 aircraft is expected to operate flights from Belgrade to Bucharest and Nuremberg. Although exact details of the incoming jet have not been revealed, EX-YU Aviation News learns it will initially likely be part of some form of wet-lease arrangement, meaning a foreign carrier would provide the aircraft, crew, maintenance, and insurance. However, unlike previous such arrangements, Air Serbia is also selling business class seats on the Embraer-operated flights (first row).

Based on current scheduling, Air Serbia is expected to add another E190 to the fleet from mid-June, as well as two dry-leased 118-seat Embraer E195 aircraft from July 1, although this is subject to change. The E195s are set to make their debut on the morning services to Frankfurt and Milan respectively. In line with those plans, the carrier has begun advertising job vacancies for type-rated Embraer E190 and E195 captains and first officers. The arrival of the aircraft would mark the first time the airline has operated Embraer jets, with the carrier previously wet-leasing the type.

Air Serbia itself has not commented on the introduction of Embraers into its fleet. Its CEO, Jiri Marek, recently said the carrier would soon introduce a new aircraft type into its fleet, noting that further details would be made public shortly. In its previous wet-lease agreement with Marathon Airlines, all the Embraer jets were wet-leased. Since Air Serbia severed ties with the Greek carrier in February, two Embraer aircraft that were operated by the airline remain in Belgrade, including the damaged jet involved in the accident, registered OY-GDC, which is expected to be written off following the completion of an ongoing investigation, and another E195 frame registered OY-GDA.

    You obviously missed the moment when JU management created an entire mess when tehy rushed to terminate the Marathon contract. Air Serbia was forced to wipe off all growth it planned. Marek did say he wants to be Wizzier than Wizz so cancellations and overall chaos point to the fact he is being successful in his plan.

      I've flown six times with JU in last month (3 return flights). To me surprise all flights were on time. Yesterday we even departed ahead of schedule. Seems to be a much calmer and normal situation than last year.

      Like any other short haul aircraft in Europe is better (except TK & Aegean).. Everybody has Recaro seats & 29 inch pitch these days.. Not that you need much more for 1-2 hour flights honestly (except if you are very tall in which case I would give people extra legroom seats for free tbh, lol)

      Those "low-cost" Embraers benches are just reliable as the ATRs- Precisely, because of the solid design of the Embraer, Marathon survived. They are a smaller manufacturer, but the safety record is impeccable. Bulgaria Air have been flying those machines for 12 years and so do other airlines like LOT or Belavia. There is a very good reason why LOT still use E170 and E190 series.

      Maybe it is some sot of damp lease. So Bulgarians provide flight crew and maintenance, while Air Serbia provides cabin crew. I just read Qatar Airways is doing something similar for IndiGo. They are damp leasing their B737 MAXs, providing cockpit crew and maintenance while IndiGo provides its own cabin crew.

      Don't spread misinformation. Marathon Airlines was a pure wet lease. A leasing agreement isn't determined by whether you paint an aircraft or not. It is determined whether cabin crew, flight crew, maintenance and insurance are provided by the airline. In the case of Marathon Airlines it was a pure wet lease with all services provided by Marathon Airlines.

      Dry lease is not postponed at all. It was scheduled from the very start from July. Again, please don't spread misinformation. Ask if you don't know.
