Ljubljana targets Spain flights and Austrian Airlines service

Ljubljana Airport has seen the arrival of several new airlines this year, with its management currently working on improving frequencies to hub airports, restoring connectivity to Spain, and securing Austrian Airlines flights from Vienna. The General Manager of the airport’s operator Fraport Slovenija, Babett Stapel, told the “Finance” daily, “In our discussions with airlines we are working hard for them to increase flights to important hubs, as these will strengthen Slovenia's connectivity to the world the most. From March next year, there will be a second daily service to Munich and based on preliminary forecasts, there will be a 10% increase in scheduled flights from Ljubljana”. Ms Stapel highlighted that, in addition to the Bavarian capital, Ljubljana boasts flights to London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Istanbul and Dubai, as major global hubs.

Iberia served the Slovenian capital during the coronavirus pandemic in 2021, with Ms Stapel hopeful flights between Ljubljana and Spain will be restored in the coming period. “I would like to see Spain on the map of scheduled destinations. We are putting in strong efforts not to have a grey area on the map. In 2021, this market was covered for a short while by Iberia with flights to Madrid, which, in addition to being an attractive final destination, also offered an excellent starting point for connecting flights to Central and South America”. On the other hand, the airport is also in talks with Austrian Airlines in order to regain flights to Vienna, which were discontinued upon the demise of Adria Airways in 2019. “The obstacle is the capacity available at Austrian Airlines, as it currently does not have a suitable smaller aircraft that would make it worthwhile to fly to Ljubljana. We are in constant contact with them regarding the establishment of flights to Vienna and, of course, we are working towards this, and we hope that it will be back in our network as soon as possible”, Ms Stapel said.

The General Manager explained that market demand dictates the arrival of new carriers, noting that Fraport offers incentives to reduce the risk for airlines. “Market demand is the main factor on the table during negotiations with airlines to establish flights. If, according to the carrier's estimates, there is satisfactory demand to create conditions for profitably, the path to a new route is much simpler. Fraport Slovenija directly reduces the risks with an attractive scheme of incentives for carriers to fly in the form of reduced prices for our services. These are completely competitive with surrounding airports. The costs of airport services represent only a fraction of all operational costs and are therefore not a decisive factor for establishing services. The state's efforts to improve Slovenia's air connectivity, in the form of aid or subsidies, also contributes to reducing risks. Even more important are activities aimed at establishing Slovenia as a tourist destination, which stimulates demand for inbound flights. Unfortunately, with all these efforts, we cannot completely eliminate the risks for carriers and stakeholders” Ms Stapel said.

LJU recovery is progressing quite nicely, more airlines and frequencies will come as time goes by. What matters is for us not to lose sight from the target guys.

I think Austrian Airlines flights are not needed, it's just LJU being obsessed with everything German. OS offers next to nothing that LH, LO and even JU don't already offer. They should focus on bringing airlines like Iberia/Vueling or even TAP.

We all saw how successful FZ was in LJU even though they failed in SKP and are struggling in ZAG.

VIE is much different hub with good connections to Eastern Europe, Cyprus, Middle East. Much better options to some destinations compared to FRA and MUC. Before Covid (and Adria) there were 70k pax per year to VIE, most of them transfering to OS.

Cyprus is easier to reach with JU via BEG than through VIE with OS.

So what Anon 06.42? What matters is what JU and OS offer from their respective hubs and not only to LCA but to LJU as well.
OS would have to compete in LJU with JU's almost triple daily flights. That won't be easy for them especially since JU has a lower cost structure and offers a more direct journey from Slovenia to Cyprus.

Then OS keeps on changing their flight times to LCA. They seem to have replaced the night flight with a noon departure. They have two flights which depart at similar times. JU on the other hand has flights that are spread out throughout the day offering more flexibility to its passengers.

It wouldn't be such a bad thing if you presented some valid arguments instead of just trying to belittle JU's offer.

How the conversation with Austrian actually went:

LJU:"hey Austrian, could you introduce flights to our aiport?"

    AU:"no"

    LJU:"okay"

Lower fees, strike contracts with tourism boards, make Slo business institutions to jump in the talks... There's a lot of things that LJU simply isn't doing.

I would love Austrian flights. Vienna is a nice airport to connect at and I know mamy Slovenians even drige to fly from there so it would be much easier to have a daily flight from Ljubljana or like 5 weekly. It is also about time to have regular flights to Spain and Italy. Would love Iberia or AirEuropa to Madrid but I am still silently hoping that Ita will apply to the subsidies and start Rome service…

LJU is known for its high fares, so flight to VIE could not be interrestimg for most passeneger. But first be patient until first flight will take off, if any.

    4. Distance from Ljubljana is approx. 400 km, so depending on traffic conditions 4 - 5 hours.

"How long does it take for Slovenes to reach Vienna by car?" Depends from the starting point. From the eastern part of the country is about 2,5 hrs, and from Ljubljana around 4 hrs. Much longer than to VCE. Many passengers will rather drive to VCE than fly to VIE as VIE will bring addiational cost to the whole journey. I beleive LJU has geographical disadvantage for VIE connections.

Well, they still didn't respond, in the article, it says that they were not interested in basing planes in the interview back in April on whenever. But if the Slovenian government were to help them financially then they may be interested, who knows? They still haven't responded since the proposal so let's wait and see.

Air Baltic is very interested in LJU market, even to set up a base, but probably not in S24 due to capacity issues. There is also Cyprus airways who expressed interest some time ago, but ot seems they just dissapeared.

“The obstacle is the capacity available at Austrian Airlines, as it currently does not have a suitable smaller aircraft that would make it worthwhile to fly to Ljubljana"

You can remove "currently" as OS will not return Dash and the smallest aircraft in its fleet will remain Embraers
In summary, if this is the real obstacle to introducing flight between VIE and LJU it probably will never happen.

And Finnair and Aegean will both be back Finnair on 4 weekly and Aegean on 2 weekly. As well as Lufthansa adding the second daily to Munich (early morning departure). Of course the summer schedule also brings back the third Lufhansa daily to Frankfurt. And if we are speculating we could see a possible return of Iberia and maybe Ita launching Rome with the subsidies but of course those are only speculations.
